Your Website Isn’t Just for Customers — It’s How You Hire and Keep Good Plumbers

Most plumbing owners treat the website like a digital Yellow Pages: phone number, service list, a few truck photos. That works for booking a water heater. It fails when you're trying to hire a licensed tech who has options.

What candidates actually check

Before they reply to your Indeed ad, good techs Google your company. They look for the same signals customers do: are you real, busy, and professional, or a one-truck name with a placeholder site? A clear About page, real photos of the team, service areas, and reviews tell them you run a real operation. A broken mobile site, outdated branding, or no careers info says the opposite.

Your website is often the first culture document they see. If it looks neglected, they assume the trucks, the warehouse, and the schedule are neglected too.

Hiring is a conversion problem

Treat careers the way you treat leads. Put a Careers or Join the Team page on the main nav. Spell out what you offer: pay band or "competitive + overtime," truck/tools, training, schedule expectations, and how to apply. A short form or "text us to apply" beats "email resume@…" buried in a footer.

When a strong candidate lands on your site from a job board, they should be one click from applying. If they have to dig, they bounce to the next company.

Retention starts before day one

A good site also helps the people you already have. Clear service pages and FAQs cut the "what's our policy on…" calls to the office. A simple portal or resources section (SOPs, brand assets, how we talk about warranties) means new hires aren't learning everything from tribal knowledge in the shop.

Technicians who feel like they work for a sharp, organized company stay longer than techs who feel like they're freelancing under a logo. The website is part of that story, whether you meant it to be or not.

What "good enough" looks like for a plumbing shop

You don't need a Silicon Valley redesign. You need:

  • Mobile-first pages that load fast
  • Real team and truck photos, not stock
  • Reviews and proof that you're booked for a reason
  • A visible Careers path with a simple apply flow
  • Consistent branding with your trucks and uniforms

Customers hire you through the site. Future employees decide whether you're worth joining through the same pages. If only one of those jobs is done well, you're leaving money and talent on the table.
